For the Tussock house the footprint of 140m2 is modest for a three-bedroom house, helping to keep the costs down. The house is directed to the north, with all living and bedrooms on this axis. This allows the house to perform well, minimizing the need to heating. The carport allows for openness to the front of the property not typical to its new surrounding housing. This carport along with the generous setback to the north allows for permeability and connection to the street and community.

Materials for this project were selected on an economic but contextual bases with cypress cladding, painted cement sheet and hardwood timber. The site is to be planted with local indigenous planting.

Set out to be replicable housing typology for the client to build a variable number of similar houses, this design is based on a ‘kit of parts’ approach whereby a gird based spatial system could vary in a select number of ways with the same construction methods. Flexibility of material changes and spatial arrangements assist with responding to different but typical suburban site dimensions.
